Gap years ‘good way to boost skills’

Posted 30 Sep 2009

A voluntary TEFL job abroad could offer a good opportunity to improve employability, an expert has suggested.

David Wray, deputy chief executive of the National Apprenticeship Service, told the Financial Mail that placements of this kind can do more than broaden cultural experiences.

Gaining new skills and making contacts are two other important benefits, he maintained, which could make applicants more attractive in future job applications.

"The main thing people need to consider is how time between education and a job can be used most wisely to put them a step ahead of the competition," Mr Wray said.

He added that taking a gap year could also provide some useful time to contemplate the career or education path youngsters wish to pursue on their return.

The National Apprenticeship Service supports, funds and coordinates the delivery of apprenticeships across England.

In particular, it aims to simplify the process of recruiting an apprentice through an online matching service.ADNFCR-2167-ID-19386838-ADNFCR
