Deferring university to work or travel abroad is a good way to figure out future priorities, according to the founder of gapyear.com.
Tom Griffiths insists many school leavers suffer from a "paralysis of choice" when considering further education or career options and he adds a gap year is one way of putting things in perspective.
It is also a good way of boosting employability after studies, Mr Griffiths says.
"If you have done work experience or done something interesting and valuable during gap year, that is head and shoulders above those who have literally gone straight out of university and picked a degree that has got absolutely no relevance to their lives," he explains.
In other news that may interest TEFL teachers, the Institute of Public Policy Research recently published a report evaluating the long-term impact of overseas expeditions.
It found mixing youngsters from different social backgrounds increased aspirations and interest in education and learning, while international experiences engaged young people with global development issues.
