People going on a gap year before university may benefit from taking part in a one-day safety course.
That is according to travel expert Gill Charlton, who wrote in the Daily Telegraph that gap safety courses are available in London for prices starting at £150.
These courses are designed to show travellers how to avoid trouble and can be particularly useful for those who don't read travel books all the way through, one parent noted.
Mr Charlton recommended Objective Travel Safety, which trains professionals travelling into conflict zones, as well as gap year travellers.
"Its staff briefed Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman before their Long Way Round motorcycle expedition," he added.
Another good way to stay safe while abroad is to take up a teaching placement at an educational establishment.
Such opportunities are available on all the continents across the world, and those interested need only be able to speak English.
