Finance expert: Brazil has a lot to offer expats

Posted 23 Oct 2009

Brazil, which recently won the bid to host the 2016 Olympic Games, could be the ideal destination for those considering teaching English abroad.

This is according to Gareth Rubin, a journalist writing for the Daily Mail’s finance website thisismoney.co.uk, who stated that the country has many improvements to look forward to in the future due to it presenting the sporting event.

"One knock-on effect will be an increase in property values; another, modelled on Beijing, will be a smartening up of the city, with crackdowns on crime and the removal of the favela slums," the expert explained.

He also pointed out that although Rio has had a turbulent past in terms of its finances, things are starting to look up as the Brazilian currency – the Real – has strengthened by 25 per cent against the dollar in 2009.

Additionally, Mr Rubin pointed out, interest rates have fallen to their lowest-ever levels and inflation has been brought under control.

This news comes after Steven Chew, owner of the Brazilian Beach House Company, told the Daily Mail that Rio has an abundance of delights to offer and its appeal among travellers is sure grow in the future.

This is encouraging news and I agree that the Olympics will have a net positive effect on Rio. I would, however, question the ability of the government to remove the favelas, since approximately 65% of the city's population lives in them. I'm moving to Belo Horizonte by this August (2010) to teach, but also to get involved with other investments, too: the school, a restaurant, and a 5-star hotel just outside of the city. I agree with Mr. Rubin that Brasil's economy is on the upswing. Personally, I think this is a "perfect storm" for Brasil, and the timing could not be better for those of us who will be making Brasil our new home.
