Fears raised over summer employment

Posted 30 Jun 2009

The National Union of Students (NUS) has warned the chances of finding a summer job this year are slim as the economic downturn starts to bite.

A spokesperson for the organisation fears the consequences could be disastrous as students struggle finance their courses, the BBC reports.

Aaron Porter explained to the news provider: "The summer jobs market is the worst we have seen.

"In some of the really extreme cases we’ll see students having to drop out of university when they return."

He added that the situation is now so bad the government and universities should consider providing more bursaries for those struggling to cover their further education expenses.

One way of making money is by taking up a TEFL position abroad.

Earlier this week Reuters reported the economic downturn has been credited with creating a surge of interest for these schemes among young Canadians.

Organisations offering TEFL work opportunities abroad claim applications have soared as much as 400 per cent since late 2008.ADNFCR-2167-ID-19242482-ADNFCR
