Facebook helps youngsters learn English

Posted 27 Jul 2010

A new film showing how people are teaching English to teenagers in Brazil was released last week (July 22nd).

It documents how youngsters can hone their English skills by using Facebook, Twitter and YouTube.

Thoughts from Brazil, the sixth film in the Learning English Video Project, can give those teaching English abroad tips on how to make lessons fun and integrate music and games into learning.

The first part of the film shows a school in Sao Paulo, where teachers practise ‘dogme ELT’, which means textbooks and a set curriculum are not used. Instead, these teachers use play and stories to teach English to youngsters.

Jose Ferraz, a high school student, explains in the film that his interest in English music has helped him learn the language better than his friends who attend private classes.

He says: “They help me a lot actually, ‘cause if it wasn’t for them I wouldn’t speak English. It depends on you, you know. If you wanna learn, you will learn. It doesn’t matter if it was film or music or English class.”

People in Brazil could also consider going to the Animation Festival, which is held in Sau Paulo from July 28th until August 1st.ADNFCR-2167-ID-800006793-ADNFCR
