Expulsion ‘not the answer’ for young pupils

Posted 29 Jun 2009

Expelling young children who behave badly in schools is not something that should be undertaken lightly, the Good Schools Guide has warned.

In news that may interest TEFL teachers, regional editor Sue Fieldman explained the policy could set youngsters "on the path to ruin".

Instead, she urged teachers to work closely with parents to find out what is prompting the behavioural problems and work through issues that way.

Ms Fieldman explained: "If one does not find the root cause when they are young, there isn’t any hope at all [of] putting them back on the straight and narrow.

"As they get older they will just turn into children who never go to school [and] a permanent truant."

Her comments follow a report from Ofsted earlier this month, which found teaching four to seven-year olds behavioural lessons at school, including how to get on with each other, reduces exclusion incidences.
