Experience ‘dark tourism’ while teaching English in Cambodia

Posted 18 Mar 2010

People travelling to Cambodia to take up TEFL jobs will have the chance to experience some dark tourism while they are living in the country by visiting the sites of the Khmer Rouge, it has been suggested.

Tom Hall, travel editor of Lonely Planet, claimed that the areas give Cambodia a chance to tell their story "on their own terms", as many individuals are likely to have questions about this part of the country’s history.

In his view, such sites can move people incredibly and a lot of those tourists will really love it, but there will be many who could react by becoming angry or upset.

Mr Hall explained: "We’ve talked a lot about dark tourism – we’ve talked about dark tourism at Lonely Planet and one of the considerations is that some people are going to react to it in different ways."

Travellers teaching English in Cambodia will have the chance to check out at least 14 places relating to the murderous Khmer Rouge, including the home of Pol Pot.ADNFCR-2167-ID-19677423-ADNFCR
