Professor Alan Maley said that the current education system is flawed at the fifth annual Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) conference last Saturday.
The English teacher, with 25 years experience, claimed that parents, students and even some educators were too focused on exam results.
He said that if subjects such as English were taught in the right way: “There will be life and love in it all, and when the examination comes your pupils will know more than if your teaching from the very beginning had not been fettered by examination requirements,” reports Viet Nam News.
He added that exams were a cancer in the school system which threatens to kills the joys of learning and teaching.
TESOL was established in 1966 and the conference is usually attended by around 10,000 people.
Key note speakers talk about a range of issues including practical advice to implement in the classroom and new methods for teaching English, while a number of seminars and workshops are also held.
