Barcelona is preparing to host its annual La Merce Fiesta next month, which pays homage to the city's patron saint the Virgin of Mercy (La Merce).
The festival, which lasts from September 23rd to 26th and attracts travellers from across the north-east of Spain, provides great insight into Catalan culture for those who are teaching in the region.
Events are staged all day and every evening during the three-day festivities, which have been celebrated by the people of Catalonia, the region in which Barcelona resides, annually since 1902.
Concerts, processions, fireworks and open-air dancing celebrations are all used to mark the end of summer and welcome in the autumn.
One of the more idiosyncratic events at the festival is the competition between costumed teams of 'castellers', who attempt to build the tallest possible human pyramids.
There will also be street theatre events and plenty of food stalls offering local delights, while circus acts will run into the night and Sardana, the traditional dance of Catalonia, will be displayed on every corner.
