‘Encourage good personal hygiene’ when teaching English overseas

Posted 17 Mar 2010

Youngsters may miss less time at school if they are encouraged to look after their personal hygiene, which is something that travellers working in TEFL jobs could promote in their lessons.

Dr Carol Cooper, a writer and broadcaster as well as a practising family doctor, pointed out that most children are taught to wash their hands at home, but the busy education environment means that this habit can get lost at school.

She remarked: "Teachers especially are always concerned that absence has an effect on a child’s education, and of course their socialising."

In her opinion, it could help for those in the teaching profession to remind the children in their care that they need to wash their hands, since it may lead to fewer days being missed through illness.

Travellers in TEFL jobs may be surprised to hear that research by Carex shows that 30 per cent of youngsters miss up to a fortnight of school each year and 61 per cent of these cases could have been avoided by following basic hygiene practices.ADNFCR-2167-ID-19675090-ADNFCR
