Education secretary apologises to unemployed Scottish teachers

Posted 28 Oct 2010

Michael Russell, Scotland's education secretary, has apologised that so many young teachers in the country are unemployed.

He was speaking at an education conference on October 27th where he blamed the over-recruitment of young people into teacher training colleges, reports the Scotsman.

Mr Russell said: "I am trying to solve a difficult situation with limited resources …
And I'm not the employer of teachers – that is local authorities," quoted the news provider.

For those in Scotland who wish to be a teacher, this could be a worry as it may be challenging to find a job.

If that is the case, then they may like to consider taking a TEFL course as it can update their skills and train them how to teach English abroad where they may be more likely to find a job in their chosen career.

Mr Russell recently visited Beijing where he stated that Scottish universities should encourage Chinese students to enrol in the institutions, which may open up opportunities for teaching English abroad.
