Doing a lot of research about schools before accepting TEFL jobs can help ensure that people’s expectations of teaching English abroad are met.
This is the opinion of Honor Baldry, spokesperson and Chalkboard site editor for i-to-i, who noted that people looking for employment in exotic climes may be worried that they will end up at an unpleasant school.
She stressed the importance of searching for information about any schools that offer TEFL students a job and suggested that some people could benefit from a supported internship programme.
Ms Baldry wrote: "Ultimately though, take things you read online with a pinch of salt, as if everyone took everything the read on the internet seriously we’d never leave our houses."
One woman who is teaching English in Japan recently told the Herald Citizen that it is not necessary to know the language of a host country, but she pointed out that it can help to learn a few key words.
