An increasing number of people are choosing to take a TEFL course as a result of the current jobs market.
The Irish Times reported on December 28th that i-to-i Ireland, which offers TEFL courses and jobs abroad, has witnessed a 30 per cent surge in people applying to take such a course over the last 12 months.
Ian O'Sullivan, manager of the Irish branch, told the news provider that the competition for college places and jobs has led to the increase in demand.
It was also revealed that it is not just graduates who are applying for TEFL courses but also people who have been employed for a long time and have been made redundant, he said.
Mr O'Sullivan is quoted as saying: "We're getting people of all ages coming to us for internships, paid jobs abroad and volunteering work. Previously we dealt with students, now it's everyone."
The most common locations for Irish people who wish to teach English abroad tend to be Thailand, China and South Korea.
Zain Wadee, director of Hyphen, a recruitment firm, recently predicted that there will be a boom in people looking for new jobs in January.
