A level results were released today (August 19th) and higher education minster David Willetts has said 'sorry' to those who have not got a place at university this year.
One in 12 A levels received the highest A* grade boosting the proportion of A grades to 27 per cent but the MP stated that top marks may be not enough for some people.
This is because universities have seen a record number of applications this year as many youngsters are worried about finding a job in the current economy.
Some universities even declared last week that they were full and would be offering fewer or no places through clearing this year.
Mr Willetts, speaking at the UCAS headquarters in Cheltenham, said that there are more university places available than ever but there will still be some who miss out.
He said: "I think it is great that young people aim high, but it is competitive and sadly not every person who applies will get a place."
Youngsters who did not get a place should think about how they can improve their CVs and reapply next year, he added.
Taking a TEFL course and teaching English abroad could be one way of strengthening a CV.
