CPP: Be responsible when shopping online

Posted 29 Jan 2009

Gapyear travellers or newly qualified TEFL teachers might want to make sure their finances are safe if booking and paying for any part of their trip online.

Kerry D’Souza, card fraud expert from CPP, suggested consumers should always ensure they use a secure website if shopping on the internet.

She also recommended people invest in anti-spyware and anti-phishing software on their computer or laptop.

It is also important for the public to check their receipts from items and services they have paid for on their card and check them against statements.

This advice could also be useful when living abroad as well as in this country.

Ms D’Souza added banks have already put a lot of measures in place to improve security and now "there needs to be more vigilance on the part of consumers".

According to a report by CPP earlier this month, online crime accounts for 39 per cent of card fraud. It also showed that 47 per cent of victims believe it is the full responsibility of the banks in preventing these offences.ADNFCR-2167-ID-18999734-ADNFCR
