Alterations in the process of applying for a new visa in India have been made, leaving those teaching English overseas with different procedures to follow, it has been reported.
Before the changes were instigated, long-term expats with five or even ten year visas – such as those teaching English in India – would leave the country briefly every 180 days before returning, in accordance with the law.
However, after reports that a US citizen may have been involved on the Mumbai terrorist attacks, new rules were ushered in with immediate effect last month which stipulate that foreigners visiting India have to leave a space of two months between each trip.
According to both the US and British embassies, the change is causing problems for those working overseas and teaching English in India and both countries have requested that India reconsider the move.
In related news, student travel agency STA experienced a 14 per cent rise in applications for working visas during the six months to June 2009, the Guardian reported.
