Celebrate the Thai Queen’s birthday this summer

Posted 27 Jul 2010

People teaching English in Thailand may take part in the national celebrations for Queen Sirikit’s birthday on August 12th.

This is a national holiday, which is celebrated every year, and it is also known as the country’s Mother’s Day.

Coloured lights and adorned decorations will be erected across the capital, Bangkok, to honour the monarch, who was born in 1932.

Across the country, Thai’s will perform alms-giving ceremonies at temples in the morning and a festival of music and culture is then held in the afternoon.

People teaching English in Thailand will probably find out how important royalty is to Thai citizens, as many households have a picture of the royal couple on their mantelpiece.

The whatsonwhen website states: “This is an opportunity to see the kind of light display that the Thais are so good at turning on for special (read royal) occasions.”

Queen Sirikit married King Bhumibol Adulyadej in 1950 and became the country’s temporary Queen Regent in 1956 when the king undertook a period of service as a Buddhist monk.
