Lima’s Independence Day Fiestas Patrias takes place every year from July 27th until 29th.
It is a celebration of Peru’s independence from Spain and the south Americans commemorate the event in the squares and plazas of the city.
Those teaching English in Peru could help their students prepare for the party or take part in it themselves.
July 28th marks the actual day of Independence but festivities start the night before with folklore and criolla musical serenades in the city’s public spaces.
On the day itself, 21 cannons are fired at dawn and Peru’s national flag is hoisted up before the President delivers his traditional speech to the public.
On the last day a military parade can be seen processing through the city.
People teaching English in Peru may also see folk dances and sample the food, which is largely influenced by Spain and Africa.
