TEFL teachers eyeing jobs in Sri Lanka may be buoyed by new statistics from the country’s tourism authority.
Some 16.9 per cent more Brits visited the nation in August 2009 compared to the same period last year, with a 32 per cent increase in arrivals for the month across all destinations.
According to the Sri Lanka Tourist Promotion Bureau, the country’s popularity may be because conflict there has largely ended and the Foreign and Commonwealth Office has subsequently relaxed tourist advice.
In addition, Sri Lanka has recently welcomed new attractions including Yala National Park, Trincomalee and Arugam Bay.
Sanjika Perera, UK director of tourism commented: "We are delighted that people have chosen to visit over the last few months showing the renewed confidence in Sri Lanka as a safe and value for money destination.
"To have improved visitor figures during the recession shows that the British public are aware of the diversity that Sri Lanka offers and keen to experience an Indian Ocean break at an attractive price."
Meaningful travel firm i-to-i offers eight to 12-week TEFL placements in and around Colombo and the hill country in central Sri Lanka for those hoping to visit the destination.
