British universities ‘receive record number of applications’

Posted 08 Feb 2010

Universities in the UK have received more applications that ever before from people wishing to commence studies in autumn 2010, it has emerged.

Figures from the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (Ucas) show that applications for university places are up by around one-fifth compared to the same time last year.

Overall, 570,000 individuals have applied for courses, representing a year-on-year increase of 100,000 people.

Chief executive of Ucas Mary Curnock Cook explained: "This cycle will be very challenging and competitive for applicants. There has been a steady increase year-on-year since 2007, but this year shows a sizeable leap in applications."

This, she added, could be due to people wishing to up-skill for when the employment market picks up and more job applications are posted.

Last week, Alastair Thomson, principal policy officer at the National Institute of Adult Continuing Education, said that people need to keep on honing their abilities if they are to compete in a fast-changing globalised jobs market.

This is something that taking a TEFL course could help them to do. ADNFCR-2167-ID-19603843-ADNFCR
