‘Be fun yet firm’ when teaching English overseas

It is important for people in TEFL jobs to strike a good balance between being a fun teacher and enforcing enough discipline to ensure that work gets done.

This is the opinion of blogger Emmafoers, who wrote in her i-to-i Chalkboard blog that it is vital that students know the rules about homework, attendance and their general behaviour.

She pointed out that it can help to remind pupils – particularly if they are children – about the repercussions of not following regulations, since this can help instil discipline.

However, she stressed that most people will like to be taught by a teacher that is approachable and friendly right from the off.

"The first lesson you have with your students is important as it sets the tone for the rest of the course," she explained.

Travellers teaching English abroad may want to follow the advice of writer and broadcaster Dr Carol Cooper, who suggested encouraging children to wash their hands at school, since they may miss fewer days from sickness.ADNFCR-2167-ID-19680043-ADNFCR
