Barack Obama plans to invest $50bn in US economy

Posted 07 Sep 2010

US President Barack Obama announced on September 6th that he plans to invest $50 billion (£32 billion) into the country's economy.

He hopes that this money will go towards improving the infrastructure of the country and create jobs as workers will be needed to build roads, railways and airports.

He said in a speech on Labor Day (September 6th), which honours US workers: "We're going to rebuild 150,000 miles of our roads – enough to circle the world six times.

"We're going to lay and maintain 4,000 miles of our railways – enough to stretch coast to coast."

However, unemployed Americans who do not like the idea of working on the roads could take a TEFL course instead.

If someone completes a TEFL course, they are qualified to teach English abroad, which is one way of getting back into employment.

President Obama has launched this campaign in the run-up to the mid term elections on November 8th where his party is expected to lose seats.

Last month, the number of job losses in the US amounted to 54,000, which made it the third month in a row in which job numbers declined.
