BAA and Unite to hold conciliatory talks

Posted 13 Aug 2010

Airport operator BAA and trade union Unite are expected to hold talks on Monday August 16th in the hope of averting a strike.

Therefore, people moving abroad to teach English may not be affected by travel chaos if the talks are successful.

The talks will be arbitrated by the Advisory, Conciliation and Arbitration Service (Acas) after Unite members voted to stage a walkout.

Peter Harwood, Acas chief conciliator, said: "We can confirm that Acas will be facilitating an early meeting of the parties once diaries can be cleared."

On August 12th, 3,000 members of Unite voted in favour of staging a walkout, which would affect six airports in the UK including Heathrow and Glasgow.

Firemen, security staff and engineers have voted to strike over disputes about pay. They have suffered a pay-freeze for the last year and have been offered a one per cent increase in their wages.

Furthermore, if the strike happens people moving abroad to teach English this summer may be faced with travel chaos as the airports will probably have to close.
