The travel habits of Australia’s prime minister have come under scrutiny after it was revealed he spends close to one in six days out of the country.
The Herald Sun proclaims Kevin Rudd one of the country’s "most extravagant jet-setters" after new figures revealed the expenses he racks up on these visits.
According to the newspaper, an excursion taking in China, the UK, Romania, Belgium and the US cost taxpayers AUS$640,749 (£289,218).
In total, it claims, Mr Rudd has spent $137,368 on hospitality overseas, while accommodation and meal expenses have amounted to nearly $300,000.
The prime minister has defended his foreign forays, insisting travel is more essential than ever to meet with other leaders and discuss the global economic crisis.
Meanwhile, recent figures revealed the number of working holidaymakers and gap year travellers who gained visas for Australia rose in 2008.
According to the Australian department of immigration, between July and December 2008 20,851 individuals were granted a working holiday visa for the country.
