People going on gap years to take part in volunteer projects or to teach English abroad have been warned of the importance of getting travel insurance.
Travellers should make sure they are protected if they fall ill in another country, lose their luggage along the way or have to face a cancelled flight, explained the Travel Association (Abta).
"Make sure you get adequate and appropriate travel insurance for where you are going and for what you will be doing," advised the company’s head of financial services Mike Monk.
All travel companies should tell their customers about the importance of getting the right cover, according to Abta’s code of conduct.
If a tour operator or holiday company can not sell the right plan, then Mr Monk said people should buy it elsewhere as soon as possible after they have organised their trip.
A recent report by Abta and the Foreign & Commonwealth Office showed that Turkey, Egypt and Mexico will become increasingly popular with British tourists next year.
