A cap on tuition fees will not help student’s choice

Posted 28 Oct 2010

Lord Browne's review to remove the cap on tuition fees will curb the amount of choice that young people have in terms of going to university.

Andy Westwood, chief executive of Guild HE, a representative body in the higher education sector, stated that the proposals made in the review will have an impact on diversity.

He said: "What you can say on diversity is that a system like this isn't necessarily going to support the best type of choice that students in England are used to or will need."

Mr Westwood added that Nick Clegg's proposals for a cap on tuition fees will not necessarily mean that students sigh with relief as they will be set at much higher levels than today.

On October 24th, Nick Clegg told the BBC that unlimited tuition fees have been ruled out and a cap will probably be set at around the £6,000 to £7,000 mark.

Therefore, young people will still be faced with higher levels of debt if they decide to go to university.

However, there are alternative routes into employment such as taking a TEFL course and gaining a certificate that allows you to teach English abroad.
