250 sure start centres may close leading to job losses

Posted 28 Jan 2011

At least 250 sure start centres, which provide childcare, will have to close by the end of the year due to councils reducing their budgets.

A further 2,000 have stated that they will need to reduce their services and at least 1,000 workers have been warned that they may lose their jobs as a result.

That is according to a new survey by the family charity 4Children and the Daycare Trust, which was released today (January 28th).

Frank Field, the Labour MP and government adviser on poverty and life chances, said: "Local Authorities must seek to employ innovative methods to ensure families – especially the poorest families – do not lose the vital support they need."

Workers at these centres who find themselves without a job may like to take a TEFL course to help them find work abroad.

After completing a TEFL course they can teach English abroad in places such as China or Argentina.

The Citizen's Advice Bureau in Birmingham has also been affected by local council cuts as its five offices will be closing, leading to the loss of 900 jobs.
