I get to spend 1 week exploring the Teaching Internship in China!
But before I start writing away… I just wanted to tell you all a bit about myself. My name is Nayani and I work for i-to-i. I came to the UK from the states in about 2007 and completely fell in love with Leeds, i-to-i and a good old Yorkshireman. I now work for i-to-i and am currently focusing on our ever-important internship programme in China.
I’ve been lucky enough to join the current interns (the interns on the February – July intake) during their orientation week so I can really check out what the internship and China, more specifically, are all about! While I won’t get to stay here for the whole 4.5 months (believe me, I tried!), I’ll definitely be able to give you some real insight into what you can expect, what to be prepared for and any other questions you might have before you decide to board the long haul to China!
Any tips so far? Things like your GHD hair straightener seem so much more essential when you’re packing from the comfort of your home… than when you’re actually having to drag that rucksack across the world!

Thanks for the info Nayani. If you know any Indian who has completed the course and is into teaching i would like to contact them. Thanks for the help.
Hi nayani.ur name sounds Indian but i understand u don’t live in India. I just thought i would approach you to clear my doubts. I am an Indian and I find this concept of TEFL fascinating. I like to travel, interact with people and i am pretty good at English’s i like the whole idea. But i always find the eligibility criteria to be "Native speaker / Citizenship of European countries”, and so i am not sure if i will end up with a good job even if i do the course eventually. Now i work for an MNC as a software developer, so if i am leaving this job i need a decent job at least if not a better one. What is your take on this? And do you know any Indian who has made it?
silly socks?
Hi Nayani,
Sorry its taken me until now to reply to your message - i keep forgetting to log into the site.
Anyway - to answer your questions (2 months late) - in March it was freezing cold here and quite snowy. In April the snow and frost left but it was still quite grim and cold most of the time. An then on 1st May, as if by magic, it shot up about 10 degrees and we've had pretty much two constant weeks of blue skies and sunshine. I even have the beginnings of a tan! Lovely. Re: the sauces - we still havent figured out exactly what they are, but one smells quite vinegary so it might well be chinese vinegar, and one was all gloopy and too sweet so we didnt get it again. The cooking is coming along nicely though - we have mastered quite a few dishes now!
Hope you're well!
Zoe
Nayani! It's so good to hear from you. Sorry about my lack of communication. How was the wedding - and LA?
I'm doing alright. There are a lot of ups and downs but we're about hitting the halfway point so that's one good thing. How's life back in Leeds?
Ello Ello, plenty of crazy nights in Beijing and then down in Hangzou too. I've been placed in Fenghua completely alone tho! Apparently i'm the only foreigner in the whole city!! I do like the school and really enjoying the job but i dont like being on my own, i'm a social creature!! I'm gonna see how it goes for a bit, but if it gets too lonely i'll have to ask for a change and join the que with everyone else waiting. How's sunny Leeds?! Pahhh
Hi Nayani! Ah, I bet it was sad to leave Beijing today (and maybe happy as well). My mom and I are doing fine, still trying to figure things out here in Ningbo. I had my first class today. It was hard knowing what to expect but hopefully I'll be better prepared in the future. Are you back to work at i-to-i? What will become of your videos?
Take care!!!
