My boyfriend and I have been teaching in Nanjing (which is near Shanghai) for 4 months now. We are teaching full time at a school that from what I gather has a similar salary, working hours and benefits as Disney English. Teaching in China can be a lot of fun, but can also be quite stressful, and it all depends on the school you work for...I've heard mixed reports on Disney English. So before accepting the job offer, I would recommend asking the school to give you the contact details of a few current/past teachers so you can ask them about how the school treats them (important things to ask about are training, apartment, whether the school pays them on time...etc).
As for traveling...you can save enough money on a teacher's salary if you live like a local, as local food, etc is quite cheap. So far we have made enough money to travel through China for 2 months in the summer, plus send a few thousand dollars/pounds home to Canada/UK. If you want to live and eat like a westerner, then you probably won't end up saving much money. There are also ample opportunities for foreigners to make extra money through part-time jobs if you're not too worn out from teaching full-time.
Hope this helps :)
They want to base me in Shanghai for a little over a year. Are you a full time teacher out there? If so, what is it like traveling about China on a teacher's salary? I would want to make the most of my time there and travel to other cities often but am curious how expensive/convienent it is to do so.
I've been working in Hong Kong for the last 3 years and do know the Disney company. As far as I've heard - they're a reputable company. Living and working in China is extremely exciting. Just find out where they want to base you.
