Hi, I am already esl teaching online without a cert, but really want to get certified to get a job abroad. So I would like to do a cert that would qualify me to work in schools in Europe especially, but also the possibility of Asia, and S. America. I would love to start off with kindergarten kids/young kids.
Can anyone tell me what cert I should do that would meet the requirements for what these schools want?
Thanks ,
Pauline

Hi there,
Before choosing a course you need to make sure that you are eligible to work in your countries of choice. To teach in Europe you would need to (a) hold a passport from an EU member state, (b) be in possession of a valid work visa or (c) be married to an EU citizen. If you do not fall into one of these categories, working in much of Europe is going to be near impossible.
Another consideration is who you want to teach. The majority of teaching work in Europe involves teenagers and adults. There is very little demand for Kindergarten teaching, unless you go to Eastern Europe, but even there it's unlikely that you will find a job solely teaching children of this age. Really, if you want to teach VYLs and YLs you should look at Asia. Note that to teach in much of Asia you need to have a degree (it doesn't matter what in).
In terms of courses, if you want to teach in Europe it's advisable to take an four- to five-week intensive in-person course such as the CELTA or Trinity CertTESOL. At £1,000+ these don't come cheap but will improve your chances in an increasingly competitive market.
To teach in Asia a 120/140hr online TEFL certificate is fine, although having a higher level qualification doesn't hurt. If you want a CELTA equivalent without the hefty price tag or time investment, you could take i-to-i's 140hr online TEFL certificate and then add on their new EDI CertTEFL.
Hope that helps.
