After being made redundant for the third time and at an age where most would retire I didn't want to hang around doing nothing till I die..... Having sent off so many applications and CV's (all mine by the way) I came to the conclusion that life and work experience counted for nothing when you are over 55. We do live in an ageist society, whatever the do-gooders and politicians say to the contrary. I am not bitter just sad that there must be so much talent going to waste because of misconception about age. It is only a number and one that should be encouraged - I am not ready for the scrapheap yet. SoI have decided to teach by doing an online course with a view to finding my own niche somewhere in the wild blue yonder.....By the way I am happily married and my wife is also looking forward to our new adventure, so please no offers lol!!
My avatar is recent and I take school groups skiing every year, and despite the above I am not a grumpy old fart, honest!!!
Now got my TEFL 140hr course cert plus a couple of extra certs...... now looking for work in Spain or UK or Thailand.....

I saw your post in the 'teaching is serious' thread and thought I could help. 61 is definitely not too late for you to teach. If you use an agent, you should have no problem finding a job somewhere (speaking about china), because there is simply not enough teachers here to meet demand!
If you search for jobs yourself you will often be upset with the outcome. Use an agent, all good ones are free anyway and you just have to wait for their suggestions to hit your inbox.
Hey Mike,
Welcome to Chalkboard! Congratulations on your first step towards TEFL :) First things first, age is definitely nothing but a number - totally agree with you on that one! Believe it or not, 55 is a great age to start teaching English. In fact, some countries abroad will look at you with a lot more respect due to your "years of wisdom".
Here are some great people that you may want to chat to if you're looking for some ideas or inspiration. They too are our "silver TEFLers" :D
