Answer:
Introduce yourself.

Set out the rules with symbols in case students don’t understand.

E.g. No use of mobile phones

No eating or drinking in class

No talking while teacher speaks

Play name games as icebreakers at the beginning of class.

Give the students a few minutes to interview the student to their left.

Each student then introduces his or her colleague and tell about what their partner wishes’ to achieve from the course. This give an indication of the standard of English from the student and this allows me to check where I can take the course in terms of students interests.

Another way is to have each student say his or her own name--the twist is that each student has to repeat ALL the names before theirs.

Have students supply you with the titles of some favourite or famous songs.

Even if the titles are in a foreign language,

work together with the students to translate the titles into English.

Write all of the titles on the board the more the better.

Sing a song with the whole class let students repeat after you.

Chorus

Everybody yeah
Rock your body yeah
Everybody
Rock your body right
Rock your body left

Now throw your hands up in the air
And wave around like you just don't care
If you want a party let me hear you yell
Cause we've got it going on again

Comment: I don't really see how you are accounting for you class being a large multi level class. Please be more specific about how you are doing this.

You have misunderstood the task. What can you do to help a large multilevel class get to know each other on the first day? How would you meet the challenges of these types of classes?

Because it's a large class, it's not a good idea to let students work in pairs or ask them one by one as it will take more time. The way to deal with large classes is a bit different. Try splitting them in groups, maybe mix low and high level students and think of an activity that will help them to get to know each other better. It can be several not so time consuming activities or one big. Then groups can present it in front of the class to other students. Just make sure it will be fun for all students, otherwise those with higher level might feel bored, but it can't be too complicated for low level students. Using visuals is always a great idea. Describe it in detail and maybe add what problems could arise and how are you going to tackle them.

Hope this helps :)
