I just read that a curfew has been put into effect in Bangkok as well as other places around the country. This means no one can leave their homes after 8:00 p.m. The warning I received in my inbox from the Warden of the US Embassy also said flights are being affected. Since I was supposed to be mid-flight as I type, I am sure my arrival into BKK would have been delayed and I'd be stuck in Hong Kong for who knows how long!
As disappointed as I am to not be teaching in Thailand soon, and as uncertain as my immediate future is, I am relieved to not have to be dealing with this in addition to the regular anxiety over moving to a new country and starting a new career as a teacher.
I also am very sad that this is happening in Thailand, a typically peaceful "Land of Smiles", and hope and pray the situation is resolved soon.
I wish safety to everyone still planning on going for the May 24 start date and hope that I'm just being overly-cautious, but I feel it was definitely the right decision for me -- and for my friends and family who would be incredibly worried about me for a year.
