Teaching in China with no Degree?

Hi guys,

My partner and I recently completed the 140 hr TEFL course with I-to-I and we're looking at working in China from September.

The trouble is, neither of us have degrees. My partner attended university but dropped out due to financial costs, and I went straight into a job after leaving school.

I seem to be getting mixed messages from different websites about whether we're able to teachin China without a degree. Some say yes, others say no. I understand a degree is required for a Z visa but I know of teachers working there who also don't have degrees.

Can anyone offer us some advice?

I have a Diploma in Finance, is that sufficient as i-to-i informs us that a degree to teach TEFL in China is not a requirement.

Sorry Steve just re-read the website you recommended- they say a z visa does technically require a degree but there are ways around it. How helpful was the University in getting your visa?

Sounds delightful! We spent a month backpacking around Morocco earlier this year. One thing we noticed there was how little spice they seem to use in cooking considering the vast abundance of spice stalls in the souks there.

How did you find your current job advertised? Was it online or through an agency or newspaper?

Lol yes- we're both spicy food fans- that's one of the things that attracts us to Sichuan. Can't wait to try really real Sichuan cuisine as opposed to that bland, westernised pap we get over here! Plus I'm a bit of an amateur cook so I might be able to pick up some tips!

Thanks Steve. We're looking at TEFL as a permanent career, so you're advice has really been helpful. I'm quite drawn to the idea of teaching in Sichuan province or Chongqing Municipality.

Fair enough. We'd actually considered using an agency but wouldn't know how to go about finding a reputable one. We're prepared to work at separate schools, but we're obviously looking at living together.

Okay, well thanks for the heads up. That's really useful to know. As I'm going out there with my partner we're hoping that it'll be an advantage as schools might take the chance to snap up two teachers at once. Where are you teaching?

Really? I was told you did. Are you teaching in China atm Steve?
