About Me

Love languages and traveling. Me gusta mucho a viajar y aprender lenguas. 旅行したり外国語を勉強したりすることが大好きです。
I have an interest in teaching English because it's fun, rewarding, as well as challenging, but also a great way to immerse myself in another language and culture by living and teaching abroad. Of course, I decided to take the TEFL course because I have no formal teaching experience and wanted to learn as much as I could and be better prepared when I started.

(Any ideas for games, crafts, or lesson plans you'd like to send my way are always appreciated. ;) )

Ohio Gozimez Manzaiya!

Genki desuka?  Japan was my first teaching job and I worked for a conversation school and taught via video conferencing (very high tech!). So fortunately I didn't have to prepare everything I needed was on the system. But since then I haven't had such an easy ride!  Ok first things first...

What type of school do you work for?  What type of lessons do they want you to do and more importantly what do your students want?  If you are unsure you could do a needs assessment quiz where you could ask about what they feel is their strongest/weakest areas (reading, listening, speaking, writing, grammar, vocab etc).  Do they want to work on pronunciation, accuracy or fluency?

As for some websites to put you on - I've started a group so new teachers can share information - check out some of the links I've added....http://www.tefl-chalkboard.com/groups/59-Teaching-ideas-materials

Also I've just found this link http://www.tefl-chalkboard.com/groups/21-TEFL-Lesson-Plans

As for assessing levels, you will find that in Asia an elementary student will generally be weaker than a student in Europe.  If you want to assess their level, it's best to do some casual assessments.  In my first lesson I always do speaking activities to evaluate (look at the structures they can use and also the vocabulary) and also a writing task.  I find these usually help me to gage students levels.  Have a look at these websites that detail what students learn at each level : http://www.oup.com/elt/global/products/englishfile/elementary/a_grammar/

Hope these help!  Any questions...add away!

Hey,

Why not have a chat with Emma, she has taught in Japan before and should have some top tips to help you get prepared:
