I am an English teacher in Daejeon, Korea! I love teaching English and I really enjoy my job. I am here for a year and a bit(Dec 2011- Feb 2012) and hope to learn some Korean, see more of Korea, maybe save a little money and become an awesome teacher!
I studied computing at uni, and have worked as a developer, but teaching is my real passion. I love teaching English, to everyone from kindergarten to adults. At the moment I work with kindergarten and elementary students, but last year I taught mostly adults. I did a Trinity TESOL course and would definitely reccommend it to anyone who is looking to teach abroad. I can't say anything about the i-to-i one, as I've not done it, but I would say that the observed teaching practise is SUPER useful.
My hobbies include reading, swimming, being online and watching TV. I also, obviously, love travelling. I am also a big fan of singing and dancing, despite my total lack of talent in these areas! I am also a Christian and love to attend churches and Bible studies.

Thanks for the reply, I appreciate it. Sounds like teacher in Korea are well looked after. Could I ask how much time you have to travel etc. I know the standard contracts seem to offer approx. 10 days plus national holidays. Does this mean you have only 2 weeks away from teaching each year + weekends?
Thanks
Hey. You seem to have been in SK for a while so I guess you'll be a good source ofknowledge. I am hoping to go there in September/October time when I have finished my job in a High School and completed my CELTA in the Summer.
Are the Korean schools generally helpful to us TEFL teachers? How easy is it to set up bank accounts and mobile phones etc? Also, can you realitaically send some money home each month?
Hope you're well,
Adam
Hi there,
Thank you for your response to my blog post and Asia is definitely where I want to go, so now I just need to narrow down the search! I see that you are teaching in Korea and was wondering if I would be okay to pick your brains about your experiences so far?
Many thanks,
Becky
I love your blog - it's been really helpful to read and get some ideas! Would you mind if I pick your brain a bit? Did you have to interview for your Korean job in Britain? I want to go straight from Thailand to Korea when I've finished my 6 months teaching there - the embassy says its fine but lots of things I've read say that the schools want you to apply from home. Also, I don't know much about the differences in Korean cities to know where to apply for, any advice? Thanks! x
Wow. i have heard that people had really bad experiences with their co-teachers or with their principals. I'm a little afraid about that. I will just try and think positive as I am a new teacher in every sense of the word! I think i-2-i has helped introduce teaching, but I don't think it in any way has actually made me a teacher. I will be interested to see how I do. I do pick up quickly so I'm sure I will be able to persevere. :)
How did you come to teach in S. Korea? Did you go with the EPIK program or did you go direct with private schools and hagwons?
Oooh ok! I can imagine that causes a few problems around holidays then! How annoying! Is your pastor doing anything ?
Thanks for that link! It would be good to get more training if the price was reasonable enough! That's long term though so we'll see how the experience goes first :P
Hi Mahalath. I will be headed to Gwangju. It wasn't anywhere on my list, but after seeing many pictures and speaking to someone currently there, I am very excited to experience it. After hearing about it, I realize I will be coming from a "small town" as Gwangju is double the size of Los Angeles, California and My city is probably a third the size of that. It will be interesting how I get on there, but I am up for the challenge :) How have you enjoyed your experience in Cheongju? I see you were there 2010-2011. Was your contract extended for another year?
It's that busy people have to book their seats on trains and buses? Jeez that sounds mental! Do they not have regular buses and trains leaving throughout the days or are they just fully booked up as well?
Haha that sounds like fun, scary yes, but fun. I had a wee giggle to myself when I was reading it. Good on you for giving it a go haha...Do you do things like that with the kids often? Yeah it's Feb 2013, thanks for the offer, I may hold you to that, no harm in getting intouch to see if there is a job going in Feb. I don't fancy having to fill your role-i'm sure I'd have a lot to live up to. I don't think i'd be able to hide my fear as easily as you...i'd be crying and screaming along with the kids haha.
Do you know if it is possible to do a CELTA course in Korea? I think i'd like to get more training other than TEFL if I had the opportunity.
When's the lunar new year? is it the same as the Chinese new year on the 23rd? I'm confused about all these different new years :P Did you celebrate new year on the 31st of Dec? Is Cheongju far from where you are at the minute? It's good that you have time to explore. Aww how unlucky, that's always the way. Public holidays on days your already off! Will you get many days of this year?
My weekend was pretty boring as usual. College assignments and TEFL work to do. I actually enjoy the TEFL course but it's hard keeping up with everything I have to do. I'm getting on ok, making progress anyway. I only have til mid March to finish it, after that I'll have to pay extra to continue on the course. But fingers crossed I'll get it finished. I'm applying for the China Internship now, did I tell you that :/ Just waiting on the bank to get back to me about a loan and then I'm going to book it. I think it'll be good to get some experience. I'm not completely confident about standing in front of a classroom so I think this will be good for me. I'll still be applying for S.K. for Feb entry. The internship finishes mid Jan.
Hey!
How are you keeping?
Hope you had a nice weekend :)
