I am an English teacher in Daejeon, Korea! I love teaching English and I really enjoy my job. I am here for a year and a bit(Dec 2011- Feb 2012) and hope to learn some Korean, see more of Korea, maybe save a little money and become an awesome teacher!
I studied computing at uni, and have worked as a developer, but teaching is my real passion. I love teaching English, to everyone from kindergarten to adults. At the moment I work with kindergarten and elementary students, but last year I taught mostly adults. I did a Trinity TESOL course and would definitely reccommend it to anyone who is looking to teach abroad. I can't say anything about the i-to-i one, as I've not done it, but I would say that the observed teaching practise is SUPER useful.
My hobbies include reading, swimming, being online and watching TV. I also, obviously, love travelling. I am also a big fan of singing and dancing, despite my total lack of talent in these areas! I am also a Christian and love to attend churches and Bible studies.

Log in to leave a comment or Create an accountHey, I was just reading through your How to- Korea post; thanks for taking the time to write that! It's so thorough and really gets into some of the more nitty-gritty questions that I was wondering. I'm pretty set on teaching in Korea, and I really want to go to Seoul! I was just wondering if you knew/could recommend a recruiter?
Hi :) I saw one of your comments on a post about teaching English in South Korea! I was wondering if you knew how difficult it would be to try and get a job in late March/April? Are schools still hiring in that time? I don't get my degree certificate until February so I sadly miss out on the peak hiring time! :(
Thanks for all the info. It's truly helpful. I have one more questoin, though, if you wouldn't mind. You mention that if I did an in-person course it should entail at least eight hours of teaching practice (although maybe you said something slightly different). Why, specifically, do you add this qualification?
I just wonder whether you think this indicates a low quality course, or if you think teaching practice is necessary for anyone who plans to teach, or something else.
Thanks again,
Jesse
Hello, i was wondering if you could give me any advice on finding a job in a private school in South Korea? I am interested in teaching at kindergarten level but have no idea on where to start searching for jobs. Are there any recruiters that you would recommend? Any help would be very much appreciated. Thank you.
All that information is really great to know. I really appreciate you taking the time and giving me your imput. I will take it all into consideration when making my choice. You've been a great help. Take care.
Hey, thanks for the reply. I am sure you would have some great insight into my conundrum. Maybe you could tell me what you were attracted to in Korea/China and some positives and negatives of each? Also, if you are studying the Korean language, how is that going for you?
Hey :) I would like to go to South or Middle America and teach there, but I don't know where exactly at the moment...
Yeah that's not long away is it, and I've not started packing yet! I dont think Daejeon is too far away from Daugu is it?! I hear it's lovely and I'm really looking forward to going there. Don't forget we said we'd meet up! I'll have to come over for the day and thank you personally for the advice and guidance you've given me over the past few months. I dont know what school I'm teaching in, I'll find out on the last day of orientation.
Hey hey!! Apologies for the long absence and delay in responding. Life's been a bit hectic these past few weeks! I have been accepted by EPIK and placed in Daegu (woop)! So I've been packing, booking, shopping, buying, visiting, eating etc lol. How are you? I arrive in Seoul on 18th! x
Hi Mahalath,
Thanks for the info, I am thinking Georgia only because I want to improve my TEFL skills. I did a TEFL Wales 20 hr weekender recently and realise I need practice.
I am use to teaching adults furthest away from education, and during the course I realised that I am use to delivering learning rather than elliciting style.
So I need to practice really before selling myself off as a teacher :-)
Thanks
John
