Please help my university research study by giving 10 minutes of your time. Native English and native Mandarin speakers

Hello forum members,

I'm hoping that you will be willing to take part in a survey for my (University of Nottingham) MA TESOL dissertation research study. This is open to native English speakers and native Chinese Mandarin speakers.

THE STUDY
I'm attempting to find out to what extent Chinese learners of English can recognise and respond to the implied meaning in certain utterances. The results may offer the suggestion that indirect speech act may be of pedagogical importance, and require classroom time.

THE GROUPS

  • Native English speakers for Phase 1
  • Native Chinese speakers (English level below Intermediate)
  • Native English speakers for phase 2
  • Chinese learners of English (English level Intermediate and above)

PHASE 1
A 10 item multiple choice survey to determine the level of directness people use when making requests.

This is in English for native English speakers, and in Mandarin for native Chinese speakers whose English level is below Intermediate level.

PHASE 2
A 20 item survey to determine how people respond to utterances in various situations. This phase also includes short video clips.

This is in English only for both native English speakers and Chinese learners of English at Intermediate level or above.

 ----
Phase one is ready, phase 2 is near completion for testing and trialling.

If you are interested in helping with the study, please leave a comment, and I'll send you the link.
Research ethics are employed throughout the study. Any identifiable information you give will not be shared to other participants, but may be available to the research supervisor and ethics coordinator. The information and ethics details are on the study website. SSL encryption is used on every page of the survey.

The survey requires registration of a username, if required will be used instead of your real name.
Registration helps to keep information secure and will give you the opportunity to see the results of the study.

Please respond as soon as you can as time is limited.

Thank you very much,

Lee.

Thanks natan358 and Citore.

It is refreshing to see responses. I appreciate the offer of help.
I'll get the link to you when I've got participants into groups.

Natan358, I remember long hours very well in China. 8am - 8pm at the weekend. Thankfully, planning time does reduce with experience.

Citore, should I get a nice comfortable, relaxing chair? (Reference to psychology)

Thanks again

Lee.

Hey, I wouldn't mind doing this as well. Reminds me of my intro to psychology courses, well okay maybe more like my linguistic courses - but I love this stuff! Let me know if you need me.

Hey Madlee, i'm working very long hours this week, however if I find the time then I'd be happy to complete the survey. Nathan
