teaching in Sri Lanka

I found this youtube video about teaching in Sri Lanka. My experience was different, but still similar. I like this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6BR8aGj0b-o

Report from Sicily

Again, the original report can be found on my website http://thelowlander.wordpress.com/ It's not really TEFL related, since I didn't have to do any teaching (no english that is) and it wasn't through i-to-i that I went there. But it was fun to travel there and I still want to share it with you guys and girls. So, last month I went to Sicily for a holiday/volunteer work. Here’s a little report: After a few hours...

hey.. hows your job searching so far??? any luck?i know tht malaysia is hiring more overseas teachers in 2012, abt 300 of them,. yeah.. and im looking for opportunities to work out of this country..irony isnt it?

Thanks for the comment, I've just got confirmed I really can't land a job in Thailand because I don't have a university/bachelor's degree. The non-native shouldn't be as much an issue as they make it sound. It's more important your English is really good, and you're a good teacher.

I'm from the Netherlands, and I've been applying to Thailand, Bulgaria, Qatar and one or two schools in the United Arab Emirates. I'm still waiting for a friend in Bulgaria to contact me back, but she always seems to forget about it. I'll be applying to a lot of other countries from now on... and look at getting some more education. If you'd like to share some of those sites, I'd be grateful.

I saw your comment about not having luck because you're not a native speaker.  If you don't mind me asking, where are you from? And where have you been applying?  Since you aren't a native speaker you might have to take your first job in your country to give you the experience that will make up for the non-native part for other positions.  Sometimes we have to take a job we don't want as much as others before we can land the big ones we do.  But don't look at it as no growth and a dead end.  Look at it as being able to prep yourself sufficiently for the better jobs in the countries you want.  This way the schools and countries you do want to be in know you're just a new kid on the block for the first time.  This allows for better persona to the schools and country you want to end up in.  I wanted to find my first job here in Serbia since I just moved here.  However, I'm having to take a job in Ukraine for now since I couldn't find anything in Serbia.  But I realized that the opportunity I am being given in Ukraine is priceless.  I am being allowed to help build and mold the business English courses, and this is my first teaching job.  Those kind of opportunities are great to add to resumes for the jobs in Serbia later.  Always find the silver lining.  I can help you search for jobs if you want.  I have tons of sites I know of, plus I get up to the minute notifications of new listings from certain sites even before their members do.

Yes, well I'm not putting all my eggs in one basket, but most baskets so far don't seem to have a bottom. I have sent out a number of applications already, and I'm not getting a lot of responses. The responses I do get are negative, mainly because I'm not a native speaker and I don't have a university degree. It's very frustrating, because some native speakers have actually told me my english is probably better than theirs! And teaching came sooo natural to me while I was in Sri Lanka... The place I'm at now is just a dead end, no growth, no nothing...

Hey!

Have chased up for you so we'll keep each other posted. Think E has been tied up because we are short staffed hence delay in reply. Either way my advice would be don't put all your eggs in one basket so I would apply for both just incase one fall through. Am speaking from experience because I applied to the China internship and didn't make it so had to wait for 3 months or so to come over to Thailand.

Anyway best of luck and keep in touch.

Sandy

No I haven't. I'm curious. For a school looking for teachers ASAP I thought they would have contacted me by now.. Then again, I send the mail during the weekend, and it has only been 2 days since most people get back to work.

I don't know if that should worry me. But if they don't get back soon I might go for the Thailand internship instead...

Hi M,

Have you heard anything about your application yet?

Sandy

thanks man, I will. Rock on!

Hey there M-T,

If you've got any questions about teaching in Thailand then don't hesitate to ask.

Matt

Hello everyone, new guy here. A few weeks ago I did volunteer work teaching english in Sri Lanka. I enjoyed my time there, and I'm hoping to find experiences here for other countries to go to and hopefully get a paid job as a TEFL teacher.
