Hi all,
I was just wondering if anyone could help me out with a few queries I have...
I am going into my final year of my degree in Septeber and am looking at undertaking a TEFL course druing the summer here in Dublin. I am particularly interested in working in China but am seeking some info on which TEFL course would be best to do i.e. the twenty hour, sixty hour etc, in order to gain optimal chances in getting a job there. Is there much of a difference in the various course levels? Could anyone offer me a quick 'idiots guide' as to what steps I need to take in order to achieve a job in a given country?
Cheers!
Louise

If you're thinking about going in August 2011, it's totally up to you - it might be better to wait and do it next summer so your TEFL course is fresh in your mind when you head out. However, if you want to get cracking and know you've got LOADS of time to complete your course, you can always start it this summer. Your best bet is to give one of our TEFL advisors a call on 058 400 50 to chat about what the best next step is for you.
Good luck!
Great! Thanks a million for your help. I found the details on the website so I'm better informed now!! I'm going into my final year in college so I won't be able to go out this Autumn, unfortunately. Do you think it would be a good idea for me to do the course this summer or next summer if I plan to go out - well... apply to go out! - next Autumn? Sorry about the Q and A drillling!!
Anytime Louise!
The China internship lasts 4 and a half to 5 months, depending on where you're placed and we usually have start dates in February and August.
Hi Honor,
Thats a massive help, thank you. Do you know what the minimum period of stay is for the internship programme in China, at all?

Hey Louise,
That's great you're thinking about working in China - I'd say that if you want to get your hands on the best jobs abroad (in terms of pay and conditions) you want to do either an 120 hour or 140 hour TEFL course, with a practical classroom element. The shorter courses are good if you just want 'TEFL course' on your CV, opening up some jobs, but a lot of employers won't be interested unless you've done over 120 hours of TEFL study.
Finding work abroad is actually relatively straightforward - once you've decided what course to do and gotten started, you just need to do a bit of research into where you'd like to go, then start applying for jobs. There's a good guide here: http://www.tefl-chalkboard.com/i-to-i/posts/961-3-easy-steps-to-becoming-a-tefl-teacher
Another option is doing something like the China internship, where you get training and a paid teaching placement all rolled into one. It's quite a good option if it's your first time teaching abroad, as you get loads of support too. You can get all the details here: http://www.onlinetefl.com/teaching-internships/china/
Hope that helps - best of luck with whatever you decide and if you have any more questions get in touch!
