Grammar assessment

Hi

I am currently doing the Teaching large class's and I am stuck on question 6.

The reason for the confusion, am I supposed to be preparing one lesson plan or 2 lesson plans since the question reads as follows;

Prepare a plan for a 45-minute lesson on vocabulary of character traits. You have a class of 60 students of different levels. Think how you will generate and sustain student interest, how you will group the students and how you will cater for different learner levels. Note: you need to focus on familiarising your class with character/personality traits such as honest, stubborn or level-headed, not moods and feelings such as happy or sad. (Include the full list of words you plan to teach under 'Target language'). When considering presentation techniques bear in mind that the target vocabulary is non-visual (i.e. you cannot draw 'honest', etc). Remind yourself of the rules of lesson planning and include the following information:

  • Objective
  • Target language
  • Assumed knowledge
  • Anticipated problems
  • Solutions
  • Preparations and aids

Then write a step-by-step lesson plan including timing and interaction for each stage.

I want to hear about other people experience with this questions.

It fairly straight forward...its writing one lesson plan but for a large class its mainly about how you will teach it if its mixed ability...

For example any new vocab can be learn as a whole - remember to use larger flash cards then what you would do in a standard class - i know in china some people have large classes and they are lucky to have a projector.

When i do large classes i try to avoid writing on the board because the board is never big enough because you have to write larger so people in the back can see.

Set an activity - When planning an activity remember to create one that can be adapted for different levels. that way you can divide the class into the different levels and have them work in groups. Make sure the higher levels have something thats not too hard but they can manage on their own...that way you can focus more on supporting the lower levels...

another option is saying you will have a seating plan from the start so that higher levels are sat with lower levels so they can offer support.

Another good things is demonstrations...especially if using dialogues...gets groups, pairs or individuals to practice and then have time at the end for them to stand up and speak - its less time for you and more time for them to use english...remember stickers are great rewards

Hi Iohang,

Oh dear - you pressed the save button by accident?  Have you included all the points your tutor requested?  I'm sure your tutor is trying to get the best out of you for your future teaching - good luck with your third attempt!

All the best,

Emma

Sure, I am already on 3rd attempt thanks to submitting prematurely when I should of saved. I am a little concerned as the tutor in question does seem quite harsh.

Hi Gary,

Don't worry as you get three attempts to do assignments - we don't expect you to always be perfect and understand everything.  If there are elements you need to work on your tutor will point you in the right direction.

Try to work with the PPP methods - as students need to see the vocabulary in context, then practice in a controlled way and then in a freer way!

Submit your work when you are ready and your tutor will take it from there!

Good luck!

Hi Emma,

Thanks for your response, Any chance I can send this over to you on e-mail or can you look at the work I have completed so far? Its way too big to cut & paste in this forum which is limited to 2000 characters.

I am slightly confused with this I seem to be getting mixed messages with every assessment that I do. I really need to push on as I am leaving the UK to take up a post overseas and need these certificates.

Any help would be much appreciated

Thanks

Gary

Hi there Iohang,

You don't need to write two lesson plans - just one.  You just need to make sure you include the objectives. target language etc....

Good luck!
