About Me

I'm a former reporter and learning support assistant from England who's decided life's for living so, while I still have next to no responsibilities, I'm spending a year of it teaching English at a private language school in Jeju, South Korea!
I aim to keep you updated on all my adventures! Let me know if you've got any questions about TEFL (I did the 140-hour combined course) or Korea or anything.

May's been an action-packed month and I feel like the old Liz is making a comeback! For a start I'm getting back into yoga, which I feel a lot better for. My foreigner friend stopped teaching her classes so I hadn't done it for a while, but somebody told me about this yogi here who is an absolute legend! He's this tiny, little, old Korean man with a long, wispy black beard who can do...

Here Comes the Sun

After months of questioning my decision to move to South Korea, I've finally pulled myself out from a destructive hole of monotony, self-pity, pessimism and processed cheese binging; the sun's come out, I'm discovering how stunning this island truly is and I've made some amazing friends, along with some wicked plans for the summer. AND I'm getting a scooter this weekend! I can't wait! I honestly feel extremely lucky to be here and my faith...

When the EPIK application first came out, Jeju was one of my top 5! It'll definitely be a place that I visit. Really liking your blog!

Hey! Hope everything is going well. I am currently filling out the EPIK form for feb just wondered if you had any advice on locations :) How is Jeju to live and work? Or would you recommend a big city? The form is immense lol!

Thanks in advance and looking forward to your next blog :), Ash.

Love, Love, Love your blog!! I'm looking into teaching in South Korea and any blog blog about S.K. I am just poring into. Keep it up with the great stories and adventures!!

Hey Liz,

I've been reading your blogs - as Jeju is my ideal destination to teach- and they have been extreamly informative (not to mention entertaining).

I especially found your blogs about winter helpful. I'm VERY nervous about the cold, as I'm from Australia and have never experienced the snow for a prolonged period of time. I was wondering, is it cold in the classrooms or are the buildings in Korea fairly heated?

I was also wondering why you decided to teach at a private school over public? From talking to other tefl teachers in Jeju do you think one is better than the other?

Sorry for all the questions, I've just been struggling to find answers..

Thanks,

Jess :)

Hi Ash,

Thanks for your comment :) Trying to post another blog but it's not working! Anywway, hopefully some more reidiculous storie

Just wanted to take a minute to say that i really enjoyed your blogs. I to I recommended them to me. Im hoping to come to South Korea next year and look forward to reading more about the excitement and challenges i will face there through reading about your adventures.

Glad your enjoying yourself :)

Ash

P.S Pissed myself laughing when you wrote about the hiking without a torch ;)

Hi Liz, I came upon your blog while I was searching for 'English teachers in Jeju.' I'm coming to teach in Jeju in April and I'm really starting to look forward to it. From what you and others have said, it seems like a great place to live/work for a year.

I hope all is well with you and that you are enjoying your time on the island. Hopefully us english speakers can all meet up when I come to Jeju (although I do want to learn Korean!).  Oh and I might be mistaken, but in one of your pictures is the Coronado (San Diego) bridge in the background?? My grandma used to live on Coronado and my sister still lives in San Diego... thought I would ask.

Hope to hear from you.  Cheers,

Nick

Hi Tom!

Excited for you! I'm on an island called Jeju, you should google it, it rocks! So much to do, especially if you're into sports/ outdoorsy stuff and there's a really great community of foreigners here. It's also warmer here in the summer with amazing beaches, so I can't wait for that. Check out Jeju ESL if you're interested.  But if you want the city life I'd go for the mainland.

In general things aren't actually as cheap as I was expecting them to be, except eating out at local places which you can easily do for about £3. But I think most people manage to save quite a bit of money while they're here. As far as things like shops and gyms go there's so much stuff everywhere, it's easy.

Let me know if there's anything else you want to ask! Good luck :)

Liz

Hi, got an email with a link to your blog from i-to-i: can't wait to go to South Korea myself now!

I'm looking to go to South Korea in May- any tips or pearls of wisdom for me?

How different is the lifestyle over there compared to here? What's the cost of living like? Is there easy access to things like gyms and shops?

Thanks in advance if you've got the time to answer any of my questions :)

Tom
