Am I going to fast??

Hi everyone,

Got question for all you TEFL people, I started my 140hr TEFL course 4 days back and now I have just finished checkpoint 3 on the 60 hr waiting for my feedback and have started to complete the 20 grammar only the first two exercises. I am concerned that I might be going to fast; I'm remembering things quite easily and passing at that point in time but I'm afraid I'll forget everything once I'm completed but I have to say the harder it get's the longer it is taking me to complete check point 3 took around 2 hours with a break or two. So I am wondering how long has it took most people to complete their course or each section?

Thanks Leonie

Hi Fred,

Thank you that was really helpful, I do have a degree which i have recently finished and before you replied back, yeasterday I applied for a teaching job in china. I thought there woudldn't be so many people taking this course if something wasn't true.

Thanks for all you help

Leonie :)

Hi Leonief,

of course it may be a little early to start forgetting things but as you said, you are afraid that you may do at a later time. that is why i recommended you to revise or read what you have accomplished so far in your spare time in order that you forget less. It si only natural to forget especially when there is so much yet to absorb. anyway my advice is still not to rush things.

i t i qualifications are recognised world wide and you need not to worry about that. It is good that you are doing 140hrs or the full pacakge because that also involves studying in a classroom and not online. Some employers prefer that you did the TEFL course in an institution rather than online. This is usually because they want to make sure you had pratical experience as well. if you are planning to kick start your teaching career somewhere in Asia, China would be a very good place to start. i to i can help you get started and there you can gain experience and once you accumulated enough then you can move on to other more challenging places like Japan and Korea.

your i to i certificates will not be the most important qualification in order to find a teaching job. if you don't have a degree in anything then you've got a proplem finding teaching jobs in many countries except for africa or south east asia like vietnam, thailand, cambodia and so on. ask i to i to help with this once you complete your 140hrs. your certificates play a very important part once you enter a classroom and begin teaching.

..continued

i, myself do not have a degree; i do have a diploma in busness which i studied in for in oxford but i still was recruited in saudi arabia as an english trainer last year and now i am going there next week to work at a college for at least 1 year. i must say though, what did help me a lot was the fact that i already had 11 years of teaching experience behind my back. i think you get what i am trying to say.

I really enjoyed doing my 140hrs with i to i even though it was more like fine tuning my teaching career. i never regret doing it at i to i. if you have opted for 140hrs then i am sure you are more likely going to make a career out of it. no course in the world can teach you how to love teaching or become a good teacher. this has to come from within you. IF YOU LOVE WHAT YOU DO AND YOU KNOW THAT IT MATTERS THEN THERE IS NOTHING THAT CAN BE MORE FUN belive me. i love teaching because i love helping people. it makes me feel proud of myself that i am offering knowledge to the less fortunate.

i have never used my TEFL career as a tool to explore the world but more as a means for survival. i have discovered myself through teaching.

I am always happy to help so if you have any questions and good luck

Fred

Hi Fred and Shelley,

fred thanks for the advice but I'm not actually forgetting anything yet it was just a worry that I will, Ive now devised a plan how im going to carry on with the rest of my course. I only started the 20hr Grammar section due to waiting for feedback as I was bored. I have one question for you Fred though was you able to find a job after this course as ive lately been hearing that i-to-i is not a credified qualification or that its not widely accepted compared to what they sell on their website.

Shelley to behonest I'm quite a motivated person I always stick to and finish things evan if I dont want to. But ive been doing like 2 modules a day on my free days which have been alot this week and I have baisically passed on 1st or 2nd tries only had to re-attempt due to silly mistakes like spelling/punctuation or getting tired at long repeating sections just crack on with it you have 3months to complete it :)

Thanks Leonie

I know what u mean I can emphasise thats why I added u, I dont know how fast ur supposed to be going on this either lol. I started on the 30th of sept and have just started module 3 lol, any advise on motivation lol?

I've completed my 140 hours course in about 1 months and 20 days, now I am sending CVs everywhere, hopefully I'll find a good position soon.

I don't think that you're rushing at all, this course can be very time consuming and sometimes tiring too, you've got  6 months to complete it, but as far as I see it ,the sooner you'll finish the better it'll be!

Just give me a shout if you need help!

Ciao ciao

Also, one advice is that if you haven't yet attended the classroom courses, make sure you have plenty of sleep the night before as it will be a long but also very rewarding and interesting day.

Good luck

Hi Leonief,

I completed my 140hr TEFL course with i to i back in August last year. Definitely, the one that took the longest was the 60hr one which I believe contains 13 modules. There is obviously more work to be done in here but what slows things down too is waiting for your assignment to be marked. You cannot proceed with the next module until the results are back and obviously passed them. In my opinion it is better to concentrate on the course you are working on. It may be a good idea to go back and revise the modules you have already completed during that one or two day time window. This will help refresh your memory and easily relate what you have learned with the modules that follow.

Once you complete the 60hr course which I believe is the most demanding, you'll find the rest, apart from the 20hr grammar for some much less stressful.

Multitasking isn't a very good idea here; put all your effort on what you're currently doing. A Scottish author one said:

'The shortest way to do many things is to do only one thing at one.'

P.S. if you need any advice on the courses, i'll be happy to help

Fred

Hi Niki,

Yeah I am just got my Feedback Just need todo question 27.28,29 again which I've amended quite quick as when I got to them I was just tired and lost concentration so I didnt really bother with them if you get what I mean. Saying that it did actually take me 5 hours to complete checkpoint3 didnt realise how much time had past completeing it. I think I'm going to slow down a tad bit then as there are areas I dont fully understand if you need help il be happy to give you some guidence and to let you know the feedback isnt that harsh they do give a few pointers and generally pass yu if you have got most of the answers correct :) (I was expecting t get ripped to pieces)

Leonie

Hi Leonie :)

I am on the 120 hr course, I started the end of Aug, I am just on CP 3 now, and am only up to question 11, and that has taken me like 8 hrs, as I just cannot do it! (Though I will keep trying) Are you really on CP 3 already?? I have completed the grammar awareness, did that last week.

I feel like you though, remembering at the time, passing and then I seem to forget everything, it isn't sticking at all!  But you are going much faster than me and many others I know that started around the same time as me. Good on you!! And good luck with it!!

Nikki
