With TEFL course providers popping up as often as new sandwich shops on your high street, it can be a tough choice deciding which course provider to go with.Getting your TEFL adventure started with the right course provider is really important, so check out these tips on what you should be looking for when deciding which provider to go with:
Accredited
There isn’t actually an overall governing body for TEFL courses providers, which means any Tom, Dick or Harry can hand out TEFL certificates. So, to protect yourself from paying money on a TEFL certificate which isn’t accredited you should check that your chosen provider is accredited by an independent body, such as the ODLQC (Open and Distance Learning Quality Council).
Supportive
Let’s face it, everything about moving abroad to embark on a new adventure teaching English abroad can be a little daunting, everything from working your way through your TEFL course to finding your very first TEFL job. So, every little bit of support you can get is going to come in extremely handy! With i-to-i’s courses there are loads of expert tutors all around the world who mark and give you feedback on your assignments and our TEFL helpdesk is only a phone call away to put you back on the right track if you do find yourself stuck! Whichever TEFL course provider you look at going with, you should check how much post and pre course support you’ll be getting and if you don’t know, then ask!
Internationally Recognised
There would be nothing worse than spending time and money on a TEFL course to then realise it is not recognised in the country you want to go to. By deciding to go with one of the big TEFL course providers, such as i-to-i, who are the world’s oldest online TEFL course provider, you can be sure that your TEFL qualification will be recognised in thousands of language schools worldwide.
Cost Effective
Let’s face it when you’re looking to invest in a TEFL course, you want to know exactly what you’re getting for your money. You might be able to buy a TEFL course with just a bag of loose change, but you’ll get exactly what you pay for (not a lot!). When looking at a TEFL course you want to be sure you know exactly what you’re paying for so you feel like you’ll be getting your money’s worth!

For the accredidation part, I'd say start with the CELTA as the top-rated standard and then work your way down from Trinity College London to the American TESOL Institute for their list of accredited courses. If you need more info (like I did when I had no idea how to become certified), check out:
www.tesol.org
It's a wealth of information and it helped me find the nearest university to start/finish my degree in ESL/TEFL.
