First lesson over - phew

Just finished my first class. The students were grade 5 (aged 12 to 13) and there were 42 of them.  Their regular teacher was there to translate (which should have been a relief but instead intimidated me a lot - seeing as this was my first time teaching EVER).  I had come up with a lesson plan to use and it went well to a certain extent but I'm not sure how much the students understood me. My "assistant" translated some parts of what I said and not others, so I really don't know how to prepare for these classes or what their base of knowledge is, other than "simple English". I suppose I'll just try and make it easier next time, but I could tell that even this time some of the lesson was too easy.  I would really really REALLY love some curriculum rather than shooting in the dark in about 2 million ways, but c'est la vie.

The teacher who acted as my assistant was very kind though and gave me kind wishes for enjoying my time here.

Passed by the first English-fluent (and non-Chinese) person on campus this afternoon! It was a welcome greeting. I'm anxious to meet the other foreign teachers and ideally someone as new at this as I am to share my fears with.

Until then, I'm going to pop open some red wine and rejoice at one day completed. And attempt to eat the canteen food for dinner. No fish please.

Well done! Keep it up! Xxx

Glad your class went OK (even if you feel like you're shooting in the dark). It gets much easier once you've gauged what level your students are at and can tailor your lessons around them. In the meantime I'd just have lots of games/activities on stand-by if you start feeling them drifting off.

Hope you enjoyed your well-deserved glass of wine!
