Hello, everyone. I'm considering The Language House for my first TEFL course. I'm a journalist/reporter in the United States and I speak French at an intermediate level. (It looks like this institution caters toward the Mediterranean region, thus my interest.)
Would this be a good choice?
Does anyone have any feedback on The Language House, or recommendations for an alternative institution?
Merci!
Kyle

Hi there,
Which school are you referrring to? There are lots of institutions with the same name.
FYI, if you are a US citizen you are most unlikely to find legal work in Western Europe regardless of which course you do. To hire a non-EU citizen, emplyers have to first prove that there were no suitably-qualified EU citizens who could do the job, which is not a very likely proposition.
Generally speaking to work in Western Europe you need to (a) be the holder of a passport from an EU member state, either through birth or ancestry, (b) be married to an EU citizen or (c) be in possession of a valid work/study visa. Otherwise, as a non-EU citizen you would need to enter Europe on a Schengen (tourist) visa, which gives you 90 days in the zone (http://ec.europa.eu/dgs/home-affairs/what-we-do/policies/borders-and-visas/index_en.htm). If after 90 days you have not managed to convert you visa to a work visa, which you probably won't have, you need to leave not just the country you entered but the entire zone for a further 90 days.
Then there's the fact that the market in Western Europe, and particularly in France, Spain and Italy, is VERY competitive, and that most teachers have a minimum of a CELTA/Trinity CertTESOL and at least a year's experience. Unfortunately, this means that as an inexperienced non-EU newbie with a non-CELTA certificate finding a good and legal job will be quite a challenge.
That said if you are keen to work in Europe, Eastern Europe is a much more realistic prospect for non-EU citizens, with a number of schools actually sponsoring visas.
