About Me

Hi,  My name is Balint, I'm originally from Hungary but currently living in Australia. I started the online TEFL course at the beginning of January 2010 and want to finish it as soon as possible. I like travelling and learning languages and teaching English is just the best way to enjoy these "sports". At the end of 2010 I want to go to China or Taiwan to teach English and of course immerse myself in Mandarin! My only concern is that I'm a non-native and all the ads that I've seen required the teachers to be one. Hmmm... Any thoughts on that? Thanks!   Cheers, Balint

Hey Balint!

I've worked with non native English teacher and I know that they are more often than not better teachers then native speakers!  As I am not non native I'm not sure just how difficult it will be to get a job.  I think you might just have to sell yourself that bit more and prove you are competant in English.  I'm sure it will get easier the more experience you get and references!  Some countries have stricter policies than others.  I would approach employers and say 'I'm not native, but I think that works to my advantage because I've been there, I've learn't it and I know the English language inside and out'.  I guess it's just a case of changing peoples attitudes towards non native teachers!

Let me know if you have any more questions!
