Monday 6th marked the final day of the Spring Festival holiday here in China and what a holiday it’s been!!
I flew into Beijing at 3PM on New Year’s Eve and was hit by the sound of fireworks and firecrackers in every direction. I thought I’d seen good firework shows in the past but it turns out they were all just a warm up for the explosions here in Beijing. The streets were littered with firecrackers, firework boxes and a thick layer of dust from the gun like explosions.

By midnight we had found our way to a small bar in the city centre and on the roof terrace is where the real party started. Amidst the noise of the fireworks was the ooo’s and arr’s of everyone around me. There wasn’t a part of the horizon not lit by fireworks.
After standing outside in the below freezing weather for 20 minutes we went back into the bar, however the eruptions carried on continuously for at least 45 minutes.
Throughout the following week the festivities continued with religious offerings for the New Year at local temples and there have been fireworks during the day and night across the city making sure no one forgets its holiday season.

During my time in Beijing for the orientation I have seen so many crazy things but I think the one that stands out is the Beijing Acrobatics show! If you want to see people twist and turn in very unnatural ways then this is for you!! I’ve never been so amazed and horrified at the same time!

My time in Beijing has been a brilliant introduction to China and now that I’m at my placement I’m excited for the next 5 months. I’ll keep you posted!!
