I've been teaching English since 1993. I earned my Master's in Education/TESOL from SUNY ALBANY. I've spent most of my teaching years in Mexico, a place that is very close to my heart. I've also done literacy and community organizing work in the US. Now, I'd like to move in some new directions. I'd love to learn how to land a legitimate teaching job in Europe without an EC passport. Anyone who has done that and would like to share, I would be grateful if you would send me a message. I'm also considering how to upgrade my skills, and I am eager to investigate all of the new opportunities there are for online teaching.
For newbies starting out, I would provide this advice: Go into the field as a professional. Teaching English as a foreign language is a demanding career, not a hobby. More and more schools are also requiring specializations, especially in test preparation, business, communications and technology, so it would be good to have some real world work experience, or a dual degree in business or technology, as well a master's in teaching. There are also a lot more jobs out there teaching small children, particularly in Asia, than for teaching adults, so experience with children and knowledge of early childhood development would be a real asset. And remember, wherever you go, there you are. Don't forget to be mindful that when you visit other cultures that people don't always do things the way you are used to. Be respectful at all times, and don't forget to have fun.

Log in to leave a comment or Create an accountHi, Andy. Thank you for your welcome message. Well, I have been teaching English for several years. I am looking for a place where I can be a full time member of the teaching community, continue to build my skills and save for retirement. I am not sure what my next move will be. I am working on a game plan now. I see that you have been to Asia. Your pictures are fantastic. One of the things I would like to see on this site is a job board where real full-time jobs are posted, rather than adverts for classes and internships, and more focus on EFL as a professional career, rather than a backpacker passtime. What do you think?
