When I set off in August last year to teach English in China I really had no idea of where it might lead me. I was hoping that all would work out, I'd like the lifestyle and make this my career. Well all of those things have happened. I've had some amazing adventures as I've described in previous blogs, I'm LOVING the lifestyle despite the challenges of the language barrier...who ever thought how hard Chinese is to learn??? I'd learnt a few languages before at conversational level and figured it would be a breeze...how wrong was I...and as for reading the characters....don't even go there!!!!
I am definitely making this my career for as long as I can but NEVER in my wildest dreams would I have imagined where this could lead.....I have been working at the Nanjing Medical University this semester teaching both Nursing and English and thinking to myself...'how much better can this get?"
Well this week I found out......I have been conferred the title of Adjunct Professor, School of Nursing.
Not often I'm gobsmacked but I certainly was on Monday at the award ceremony!! I am the first foreign person to be awarded the title and (while some may think I'm just blowing my own trumpet!) I feel just so proud that I wanted to share the news with my fellow bloggers.
So for anyone out there wondering where TEFL/TESOL might lead you.......I guess my answer would be...you just never know and even in your wildest dreams probably cannot imagine......but the excitement, enjoyment and knowledge that you are making a difference gives you so much to be thankful for in this life.
Once I come down off cloud nine I'll update you all on life in Nanjing!!!!

Hi Cheryl
I have been a Registered Nurse for more than 30 years. In addition to that I have also done 2 degrees in Health Science and Health Administration. TESOL = Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages. I am fortunate that I've found the opportunity to combine my lifetime experiences with my new lifestyle in TESOL :)
Please tell me more about teaching Nursing? I didn't know one could study that. What is TESOL?
Kind regards
Cheryl
so inspiring!!! :) :)
That sounds so great :) Did you do a degree in Nursing? Because, I can't yet apply to TEFL course as I want to get a Bachelor degree first, in Adult Nursing. But I also wonder if I could turn that trip abroad for teaching English into a career. You gave me some re-assurance :) Thank you soooo much! Good Luck in the future and all the best ;) This opportunity sounds a bit like once in a lifetime haha
Congratulations! Your blogs are some amongst several that are continuously motivating me to get off my ass and finish my course so i can experience these adventures for my self :)
Keep them up :)
Ash
